What is HCHS/SOL?
- The largest Latino health study in the US, conducted in Chicago, Miami, New York, and San Diego.
- The purpose of HCHS/SOL is to learn more about the health of Hispanics/Latinos living in the US.
- A study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
- Who can participate in this health study?
Only households that receive a HCHS/SOL letter are invited to participate. Household residents must be:
- Individuals who self identify as Hispanic or Latino.
- Individuals between ages 18-74.
- Residents of Chicago who live in the Northwest Area.
- Individuals who plan to remain in the Chicago area for the next three years.
What communities are receiving letters?
- Albany Park
- Irving Park
- Avondale
- Logan Square
- Humboldt Park
- Hermosa
- Belmont Cragin
What does HCHS/SOL involve?
- A one-day medical exam that includes:
- Blood pressure test
- Diabetes test
- Electrocardiogram test
- Hearing test
- Lung function test
- Dental examination
- Nutritional assessment
- Physical activity assessment
- Home sleep monitoring
- Participants will be asked to answer questions about their health.
- Participants will receive a copy of all tests results.
- After the medical exam, participants will be contacted once a year for three years to provide us with updates on their health.
What are the reasons for participating in this study?
- Participants receive medical exams at no cost.
- Participants may learn more about their own health status.
- Results from the study may help us understand factors that affect Hispanic/Latino health.
- Results from the study may show how social cultural factors affect Hispanic/Latino health.
