LALO’S LIVE THURSDAYS BROUGHT TO YOU BY E-HISPANICS.COM

DARWIN NOGUERA

Pianist/Composer Darwin Noguera launches debut album, “The Gardener”, with Evolution Quintet. It was on the preliminary ballot in this year’s Grammy Awards for best album of the year.

Noguera delights in combining traditional Latin forms and hard-hitting jazz, to the benefit of both idioms. Of course, that mash-up has existed since Jelly Roll Morton first added “the Spanish tinge” to his ragtime masterpieces, and when, shortly later, the flowering of American jazz left its impact on the dance bands of Cuba and Puerto Rico. But there’s always room for a fresh approach, as proved in the 40s, when bebop embraced Afro-Cuban rhythms; and in the 50s and 60s, with the rhumba and the bossa nova; and again in the 90s by the Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez and the Puerto Rican saxist David Sanchez, both of whom enriched the Latin Jazz idiom with the folk traditions of their native lands.

GABRIEL IGLESIAS COMING TO THE CHICAGO THEATRE – APRIL 10

Gabriel Iglesias has been described as unbelievably funny, electrifying, and a gifted performer who has the ability to consistently deliver a quality comedy experience in every venue he performs in. His high-octane show is a hilarious mixture of storytelling, parodies, characters and sound effects that bring all his personal issues to life. Gabe’s clean, animated comedy style has earned national crossover appeal. Ask anyone who has seen him in concert and you will probably hear the same thing, “He was so funny!”

Gabriel is one of the fastest rising stars in the comedy industry today. Iglesias was put on the map by his appearance on Galavision?s TV show, “Que Locos!”. This highly successful television comedy hour quickly spawned into a nationwide tour of sold-out performances across the country. The experience not only helped to develop Gabriel’s loyal fan base, it also led to numerous film and television roles.

Known as the “fluffy” comic in a Hawaiian shirt, the 32-year old funny man often riffs about his girthy middle – whether he’s talking about how little dancing it takes for him to work up a sweat at the nightclub, or how hearing his girlfriend coo the words “chocolate cake” over the telephone works for him like phone sex, he evokes laughter.

The youngest of six children, Gabriel spent his first five years living on the eastside of Chula Vista. By the age of eight, Gabriel and his mother were on their own and making a fresh start in the city of Long Beach. One night Gabriel’s mother took him to the local video store where he rented a comedy tape starring Eddie Murphy. Two weeks later he was motivated to audition for his 5th grade talent show and to his surprise he was the hit of the show.

Gabriel’s mass appeal opened the door to a rare opportunity to film a second one hour special and DVD entitled “2 Hot 2 Fluffy” debuting on Comedy Central in October of 2009. The new special & DVD is packed with a perfect blend of impeccable voice skills and an uncanny knack for hilarious storytelling. His vast imitative skills re-create numerous sound effects from speeding cars to microwave ovens to a plethora of dead-on voices. The new special is destine to top his previous comedy CD “Picachu” and his hugely successful special & DVD “Hot & Fluffy” which continues to air on Comedy Central and is available in major retail outlets nationwide
